De La Rue retains crown in PrintWeek's Top 500

De La Rue has held on to the top spot in this year's definitive list of the largest print companies in the UK with many companies posting solid growth rates.

PrintWeek's Top 500 2008 also saw Williams Lea Group leapfrog Chesapeake UK to second place with an impressive 24% rise in turnover.

Darryl Danielli, editor of PrintWeek, said: "Thanks to innovation or just plain strong leadership, many in the sector still make a healthy profit and will continue to do so whatever the economy throws at us."

The Top 500 also saw printers in the UK increase their profit margins for the first time in five years, and the number of companies with a margin of more than 15% increased to 20 from 17 last year.

This year's special edition of the Top 500 also contains a review of the year, an outlook for the print sector in 2009 and advice on how to raise funds to weather the economic storm.

De la rue is the one of best security printer in Europe market. The reason behind they have been in this market since 1821. So they knew what market requirements and their needs. The strategy required for successful company according to the market requirement. Which De La Rue is doing. I wish next year should be same result.

Also William lea is one of the best BPO across the globe. Best of luck.

Where is Mr Biltcliffe and his mighty Webmart in the Top 500?

Don't see him there - I'm sure he will have plenty to say on that glaring omission

Alan Partridge - 01 December 2008

Gerry Anderson - 01 December 2008

Interesting to see how few actual printers, as opposed to print related businesses, there are in the top 500

Miles Linney - 02 December 2008

Dear Printweek

I think my copy of the top 500 I recieved today had loads of mistakes in \(wrong profit numbers compared to last year - same entries for certain companies as last years)

I think I am correct?

Can you confirm for me please

Thanks

Miles

This must win most useless supplement of the year award. what does it actually prove... so De La Rue are number one, for what turnover? divide that by the number of employees and you get a figure of £120,115 per person employed. Not exactly mind blowing stuff considering their position monopolising a particular sector of a very very large industry. Top UK printing company, so if I want a top glossy magazine I should ring De La Rue, I don't think so.

Polestar in at 6 with an operating profit of -2.69%, that's hardly top.

I'm off to ring Karthick and find out about this William Lea chap!

Alan Partridge - 02 December 2008

Good point Nirav, turnover is vanity and all that...and in the case of Polestar who have not been able to post a profit for I guess well over a decade, it's strange that this warrants a top 10 placement in the league

Perhaps as all the talk is of margin at present, or lack of it, the top 500 should be based on the companies who actually managed to squeeze a margin/net profit out of their turnover this year! - An achievement in itself for most in today's climate

What do you say Printweek?

Richard Head - 03 December 2008

May be we could have a Turnover is Vain - Profit is Gain top 500

Think some of the companies listed above may appear a lot further down the rankings in that.

Or how about a table of companies you can get a decent credit score on to deal with award. Or those that have reasonable payment terms and do not leverage their size to screw suppliers awards.

With some of the top 500 ... ditto above

Leafing through the list I see that there are quite a few names which are not in business anymore - one of them went bust in June 08 and is still featured. I think the list could be a little bit more up to date

Richard Head - 04 December 2008

Nuff said Lena ...

Who is this William Character?

Bring him before me. Make him kneel before Zod and forever serve me. All shall bow to the general

Richard Head - 04 December 2008

Good point General Zod.

Welcome to our humble planet. Have you heard of Colin Thompson in your Galaxy?

Look forward to your insight and wisdom.
